COLORADO RAILROADS

September 11 – 19, 2010 9 Days $1,697.00

7 Railroad experiences…
Beautiful Fall Colors of the Rocky Mountains…
This is one of those tours that you definitely need compare what
experiences you are getting for your dollar. We have included 7
railroads plus all breakfasts, 4 lunches and 1 dinner.

Day 1: Today we make our way to Denver for our first night out where we
will meet our traveling friends from Fort Collins who will join us for this
awesome railroads tour!

Day 2: This morning our first train excursion will be aboard the
Georgetown Loop Railroad. Here we will begin to enjoy the scenic Rocky
Mountains as we wind our way through silver mining country aboard the
1920’s steam powered train. We will also visit the Colorado Railroad Museum
just west of Denver. The building is a replica of an 1880’s style depot. It houses
thousands of rare photographs and artifacts. We will then head south to
Colorado Springs where we will enjoy an included dinner before we retire for
the night. Our overnight will be in Colorado Springs for 2 nights.

Day 3:This morning we board the Pikes Peak Cog Railway, which will
take us to the top of America’s best-known mountain, Pikes Peak, at 14,110
feet. The first few miles of track follow a cascading stream through a steep
canyon filled with dense pines and steep boulders. At about 11,500 ft., the
train climbs above timberline where you will enjoy the awesome views. Our
next stop will be at the Garden of Gods for an included lunch with Native
American dancers as entertainment. We are then off to Cripple Creek for the
Narrow Gauge Railroad. The old steam locomotive will transport us back to
the mining days while seeing the beautiful colors of fall.

Day 4: Today we will board the Royal Gorge Railroad for a scenic train
ride through the Royal Gorge, along the Arkansas River. From the open-air
observation cars you can see the hawks circling, maybe observe some big horn
sheep, see evidence of abandoned roads, rails and mines, the bridge overhead,
and how the mighty Arkansas River cut its way through the gorge. We will
have an included lunch at the Royal Gorge Park before leaving for the Great
Sand Dunes National Park. Here we will explore the tallest sand dunes in
North America via a dune ride. Our overnight will be in Alamosa.

Day 5: Today the 5th railroad awaits us. The Cumbres & Toltec Scenic
Railroad, the finest remaining example of the original Denver and Rio Grande
narrow gauge line, a railroad built in the 1880’s to serve miners and loggers.
One hundred years ago this daring steam engine railroad opened up the Great
American West. Over 64 miles of unspoiled scenery awaits us as we climb
through the spectacular San Juan Mountains. Wailing whistles bounce down
canyon walls, while far below the Los Pinos River glistens in sunlight. Through
tunnels and over trestles, you’ll experience it all!!! We will have an included
lunch at the half-way point. All during the six-hour ride we’ll be going back
and forth from New Mexico into Colorado. Overnight in Durango.

Day 6: The Durango and Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad awaits us.
This coal-burning locomotive traverses through the San Juan National Forest
along the Animas River. The sights and scenery you encounter on this train
trip through the National Forest are truly spectacular. Our motorcoach will be
waiting in Silverton to take us on into Ouray for our overnight stay.

Day 7:This morning we are out on a guided 4x4 adventure of the San Juan
mining country. We will then head to the Black Canyon of the Gunnison
National Park for a driving tour. No other canyon in North America combines
the narrow opening, sheer walls, and startling depths offered by the Black
Canyon. Overnight will be in Grand Junction.

Day 8: The scenery for an included breakfast will not be any better than at
Colorado National Monument. Here the park preserves the grand landscapes
of the American West with its sheer-walled canyons and towering monoliths.
We will then depart for the historic town of Leadville and the last of our train
excursions, the Leadville, Colorado & Southern Railroad. Originating in
“the highest incorporated city in North America,” the LC & S will take us to
the continental divide. This journey is full of breath-taking panoramas across
the Arkansas River Valley with the beautiful Aspens dressed in their fall colors.
Our overnight stay will be back in Denver.

Day 9: Today we say good-bye to the magnificent mountains and return to
Yoder.
