Day 1: Leaving Yoder this morning, we are eager to enter the world of the South, maybe with the question: “What is a Cajun?” Culture and history defines today’s Cajun. Get ready to experience a small part of their lives over the next 8 days. Driving south most of the day, we arrive in Texas for the night.

Day 2: By noon today, we approach Lake Charles. What a better way to start off our Cajun tour than with an included Cajun lunch. Then we kick off our journey at the new creole Nature Trail Adventure Point to immerse ourselves in nature and Louisiana’s unique culture. Here we meet our local step on guide. We start discovering the wild and beautiful Creole Nature Trail known as “Louisiana’s Outback.” This world-famous drive begins in Sulphur and winds through vast, unspoiled marshland for close-up views of alligators, birds, and other wildlife. There is time for beach-combing for shells before we arrive at our ferry ride across the Calcasieu Ship Channel. A couple of wildlife refuges await us before making our way back to Lake Charles for the night. (B, L)

Day 3:  This morning takes us to the Gator Chateau to interact with live alligators and learn more about them. Maybe you would even like to hold a baby alligator! Then it’s on to Kelly’s Landing, an agricultural industry of crawfish and rice farming. Kelly will show us around his interesting farm and provide an included lunch. The day would not be complete without visiting Avery Island for a tour of the Tabasco Factory. Then it’s on to Houma, LA for the next two nights. (B, L)

Day 4: This morning we visit “Mr. Charlie,” an authentic offshore drilling rig which has been brought ashore and converted into a museum. No Cajun Tour would be complete without a swamp and alligator tour. After our included lunch, sit back on our swamp boat as our captain, a true Cajun, takes us on a ride through the backwaters. Next, we head farther south to learn about the shrimping industry. The Chauvin family has a passion for the shrimp industry and teaching folks more about it. We tour their facilities which includes the different types of shrimping vessels. We visit the ice house to see how it works and witness the force of the ice blower. Fresh ingredients are used at their facility for our dinner. We head back to our hotel in Houma. (B, L, D)

Day 5: Today we head to New Orleans! The Big Easy is famed for its old world charm. We experience Southern hospitality, steamboat style, aboard the Steamboat Natchez for our live Jazz luncheon cruise. After lunch, a local step on guide shows us the city. We hear about the old French Quarter, Market Places, Squares, French and Spanish Homes, Parks, Giant Moss-hung trees, above ground burial, and enjoy a New Orleans treat called baguettes. There is time on your own to explore the French Quarter before heading to our hotel for the night. (B, L)

Day 6:  This morning we step into the fascinating world of Creoles who, at the Laura Plantation, lived apart from the American lifestyle for over 200 years. This sugar plantation home is saturated with stories. Our guided tour is based on “memories” of the charm and tragic lives of four generations of the plantation’s Creole men, women, slaves, and children who lived here. It is in these 150 year-old cabins, where the first recorded west-African folktales of the legendary Br’er Rabbit happened. A Creole lunch is included before getting on the river road which takes us past some of the old plantation homes along the Mississippi River. By mid-afternoon we make our way to Lafayette. Here we experience an evening of Cajun music and food. For those that enjoy tapping along with the music, they will teach us a few dance steps to a Cajun Waltz. What a fun and unforgettable experience! (B, L, D)

Day 7:  This morning we visit Acadian Cultural Center to watch a film before arriving at Vermilionville Historic Village. This reconstructed historical village provides an insight into life during the 18th and 19th century in Southern Louisiana, particularly for Native Americans, Acadian, and Creole settlers. On our guided tour, we see several historic homes and numerous artifacts from that time period. Also located in the village are artisans and craftspeople who conduct demonstrations and exhibitions of their talents. Following our tour, we enjoy an included lunch with a sample of some Acadian and Creole specials. The rest of the day is driving as we start our journey home. Overnight is in Texas. (B, L)

Day 8: What an 8-day experience of Cajun and Creole culture that we can share as we make our way north along the interstates back to Kansas. (B)
