Concordia Day Trip
April 23, 2021
Join us for a visit to Concordia KS and see the Orphan Train Complex, Nazareth Motherhouse, and the Brown Grand Theater.
The Motherhouse, Orphan Train Museum, Brown Grand Theater, plus included lunch! A local guide shows us around the sites of Concordia, Kansas. When the Sisters of St. Joseph arrived in Concordia in 1884, one of their first tasks was to build a Motherhouse, which would serve as their convent. We tour this massive, five-story native stone building. We then visit the National Orphan Train Museum to learn about the stories of children being sent west, often speaking no English, with their names pinned to their clothes in hopes of finding a home. We also tour the beautifully restored Brown Grand Theater, built in the late 1800s by then-banker Napoleon Bonaparte Brown. He saw the need to accommodate the growing number of traveling entertainers en route from Denver and St. Louis. We also visit the 140 foot long, Whole Wall Mural depicting the rich history of Cloud County. (L)
